12 Easy, Cheap Ways to Organize Hair Tools — Think Outside the Closet - Houston Professional Organizer (2024)

Organization Ideas

Written By Samantha Davis

Hi, everyone! Today we’re going to talk about a very specific type of bathroom organization: hair tools.

If you’re anything like me, you have a large variety of hair tools. I currently own:

  • Crimping Iron

  • Straightener

  • Waver

  • Two curling irons

  • Hair dryer with fancy attachments

  • Normal hair dryer

I know this sounds like a lot, but when it comes to hair, you’ve got to have the right tool for the job - and anything that saves me time in the morning getting ready is a must-have. Because then I can sleep in and still have my hair look like this:

At first, all these things were just thrown into a drawer in the bathroom, but the cords kept getting all tangled up in this horrible mess. So I took a look at my bathroom space and decided to get organized.

1 - PVC Pipe Hair Tool Stand

This is a great DIY solution for anyone who doesn’t have tons of hair tools.

Head to Home Depot or Lowe’s and pick up a PVC “Y” Connector. Paint it with a primer and spray paint of your choice.

Then, to add stability, glue some fishing weights to the bottom on the inside (try using Gorilla Glue).

Super easy, super cheap, and can be personalized to match your style! You just slip in your hair dryer and straightener or curler and set it on your countertop.

2 - PVC Curling Iron Holsters

Yet again, this one is easy peasy.

Just pick up some hook-and-loop tape and PVC pipe from your local hardware store.

Use hook-and-loop tape to attach 5-inch lengths of 2” PVC pipe to your cabinet door to hold curling irons.

Do the same thing with 3-inch pieces of 1.5” diameter pipe to hold the cords. Make sure you measure your irons before cutting the pipe!

3 - Command Hook Holders

Command hooks are super handy and a great way to store hair tools without spending lots of money.

Pick up some Command Hooks at the store, but make sure they’re made to hold at least 1 pound of weight or more. Attach them to the inside of your bathroom cabinets and let them sit for about an hour before using. Then wrap your hair tools in the cords and hang them up!

4 - Metal File Box

This is another super-affordable way to store hair tools.

Go to your local Office Depot, Target, or Container Store and pick up a pretty metal file box. Make sure it’s either wall-mountable or made of mesh.

If it’s made with mesh, all you need are some command hooks to attach it to the side of your bathroom counter, and voila - instant storage!

5 - Shoe Organizer

Just because a pocketed shoe organizer is marketed as a shoe organizer doesn’t mean you can only use it for shoes!

Simply hang it over a door in your bathroom and fill it up with all your hair tools, brushes, sprays, and combs. Super easy, super cheap, and super accessible.

I especially like this one from Walmart. It’s teal and covered in cute little polka dots. It even has a little mirror in the middle and straps to hold your irons in place. But you can also use just a plain one from anywhere!

6 - Stainless Steel Utensil Holder

Who doesn’t love a trip to IKEA? You can get lost in there, but it’s so much fun.

The next time you’re browsing the store or their website, pick up one of these stainless steel utensil holders. You’ll find them in the kitchen section.

Though they’re usually used for ladles, spatulas, and similar utensils, they’re great for hair tools because they’re sturdy and tall enough to hold long irons.

Plus, the stainless steel can look both industrial and glamorous.

7 - Magazine Holder

Yet again, repurposing something you already have can save you tons of money on organizing!

Look at your desk and see if you can find a magazine holder.

This super cute gold metal magazine holder doubles as a great way to store hair tools. And it’s adorable and adds a touch of metallic glam to the bathroom. Just wrap up your irons in their cords and drop them in!

8 - Hair Tool Caddy

Another bathroom storage solution is the hanging hair tool caddy. You can find these at Target, Walmart, Amazon, and other department and beauty stores.

Simply hang it over a towel bar and you’ve got a perfect spot for your flat iron, curling iron, and hair dryer.

They usually include a convenient little cord storage area on the back, too!

9 - Wooden Hair Tool Organizer

If you like a little more of a natural look, this Threshold Hair Tools Organizer is a great option!

Made from luscious acacia wood, it looks absolutely gorgeous on your countertop. It features three metal pockets perfect for holding flat irons and curlers, as well as several divided sections at the bottom for sprays, hair ties, and other hair accessories.

Best of all, the back of the organizer is magnetic, so you can store all those bobby pins out of sight!

10 - Metal Over-Cabinet-Door Organizer

If you don’t trust command hooks to hold strong, but still want to use your cabinet door for storage, this Over-Cabinet Door Storage Basket from mDesign is perfect!

It’s sturdy and made to fit pretty much any standard bathroom cabinet door.

Just slide your hair tool through the circle, and the basket at the bottom can hold the cord if necessary.

11 - Wall-Mounted Iron and Blow Dryer Holder

Amazon has a TON of cool wall-mounted options for hair tool storage.

This one is my absolute favorite. It’s classy, hides and cleans up the cord mess and has enough room for 4 different hair tools. It even offers a spot for a power strip to plug things in.

So I tried all of these and didn’t really feel like they fit well in my bathroom. We only have plugs on my partner’s side of the counter (annoying, I know), so I would have to constantly move the tools back and forth to get out of his way when he was getting ready.

We also have a medicine cabinet right over the outlet, so mounting an organizer to the wall would require taking that out or placing the organizer so high I couldn’t reach it without a ladder. Sigh.

Trying to store them on the countertop was also a problem because of my cat, Beverly. She LOOOOOOOVES to chew on things, especially cords. I have lost many a phone charger and even a keyboard due to her chewing.

So I decided that my hair tools would be going in a drawer, much to Beverly’s dismay. But I couldn’t just throw them in there; the cords would get all tangled up and become a total mess.

Here’s an image of what it probably looked like (at least this is what it felt like) when I pulled my hair tools out of the drawer after just throwing them in there haphazardly. Yikes.

I needed a way to keep each tool separated while still looking nice, which is what brought me to my final attempt: The Home Edit Silicone Hair Tool Holder from The Container Store.

12 - Silicone Hair Tool Holder

12 Easy, Cheap Ways to Organize Hair Tools — Think Outside the Closet - Houston Professional Organizer (15)

Silicone is such a great material for hair tool storage because it’s HEAT-RESISTANT! So you don’t have to wait until your flat iron cools down to put it away. Brilliant!

This little organizer is the perfect size for every hair tool I own, even down to the super long hair dryer curler combo.

And because it’s silicone, it doesn’t slide around inside the drawer. I got two of them and it fits perfectly in the drawer and looks beautiful.

At the end of the day, the silicone hair tool holder was the organizing solution that worked for ME and my unique space, but that may not be the case for you! Take a look at your bathroom, how you use the space, what you access the most, and what opportunities are available in your unique setup.

How do you keep your hair tools organized? Tell me in the comments!
